Working with the Elderly

while each individual is different there are some basic questions we should all be asking our elderly parents and ourselves as well as other elderly individuals that we are close to. These questions seek to understand where the person is, where they want to go, and how to get them there. We should first find out what is going on in the individual’s life.

Where are they staying?
With whom are they staying?
Who takes care of them?
Are there any medical or other diagnoses?
How are they paying for things?

Next, we clarify what they would like to happen as they age.

Who do they want to take care of them?
Do they want to go into a long-term care facility?
Who do they want to run their affairs should be unable to?
Who do they want to make medical decisions for them?
How do they want to pay for their care?

Finally, we ask them how they want to achieve their desires.

How do they want to pay for their care?
Do they want to rely on Medicaid and Medicare?
What community programs will help them get there?

An Elder Law Attorney with a good team of care givers can help the elderly be taken care of in a way that they desire.
